Mia's 17th Birthday!

When you donate blood...you are giving someone a chance
at living life. To experience things you may take for granted.
Mia and family are so thankful to many generous strangers who
take the time to keep her alive.
How could you say thank you enough for that?!

Have fun at Homecoming - thanks to blood donors!

Mia's 17th Birthday - at the Hospital - 195th blood transfusion!

Happy 17th Birthday Mia - she spent her actual birthday at the
hospital receiving her 195th blood transfusion.

In honor of her special day...
Mia and her birthday twin and special nurse - Miss Christine -
collected gift cards for teens in the hospital.
They received over $1,000. to buy gift cards
so teens can get a special surprise after treatments.
We have a wonderful toy closet for children but
teens (including Mia) don't go in there because they don't
pick out toys.

Hey Dad!

Hey Mom!

We said a big thank you to everyone who donated
and put their names on a sticky note on Mia's
hospital room door.
What a great birthday treat to be able to give back
to the hospital that helps save Mia's life every month.

Blood Transfusion #194

Not much to say ... Mia took a great Benadryl nap all morning.

Mia and her nurse Miss Christine share a birthday.
It was always meant to be that she was our nurse!
What a special bond to have someone care for you for over
17 years...it's amazing!

If you would like to donate to Mia’s teen project to go towards gift cards
For teens ... you can click the link below.
Thank you so much!

Cardinals 50/50 Raffle for Be The Match

Mia and family was asked to help with the 50/50 Raffle
for Be The Match at one of the preseason Cardinals game.
We had SO much fun!

Mia and her sister helped with selling the raffle tickets.

They also got some sweet seats and were able to watch the
Cardinals warm up.

We helped to raise about $23,000. for patients like Mia who need
a bone marrow transplant for a cure.

#193 Blood Transfusion

Today we had 2 IV's running...one for blood and one
for desferral which rids the body of the extra iron
it gets during transfusions. We are always trying to help her
heart and liver not to be overloaded with iron.
It causes death.
So 2 IV's today it is!

Blood Transfusion #192

Attention all fellow human beings...
there is a shortage of blood on the shelves for patients
like Mia who REQUIRE it to live.
PLEASE help donate blood if you are able to.
She is literally holding her life in her hands every time
you take the time to simply donate.
If you are blood type: 0 - we need you!

We loved visiting with the future Dr. Chris Beann
when he was doing rotations at Cardon Children’s!!

Remember to donate blood!

#190

If you’ve taken the time to donate blood I could honestly never thank you enough. Mia wouldn’t be here without you and I’m blessed to watch Mia simply live her life and experience all the things that life has to offer. We’ve recently had a bump in the road with Mia’s health, specifically her iron counts. If you didn’t know, the blood transfusions that SAVE her life every 3 weeks (just had #190 today!) overloads her heart & liver with iron which is deadly. How ‘IRONic’ that the blood which helps her stay alive slowly builds up the iron on her organs, they call it a silent killer. Unfortunately since last year her iron counts have doubled. That’s bad. So if you are able to pray for Miss Mia that would be so appreciated! (Mia needs to stay on top of taking that medicine too.) We’ll see what her levels are at her next MRI probably this winter. Mia you are the bravest girl ever, I know I’ll never be as strong as you are. God gives His hardest battles to His strongest soldiers! #donateblood @miasmarrow

Good Friday - #188

It’s Good Friday today, and we can’t help but think of how symbolic it is to be receiving a life saving blood transfusion today, on Good Friday. Jesus donated His blood for us on the cross 2,000 years ago...’by his wounds, you are healed.’ 1 Peter 2:24 *Extra thankful for the gift of life given to Mia by people who take the time to donate blood and to celebrate an Easter weekend filled with faith, family, and friends! “Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.” John 15:13 🙏🏼

Two life saving blood transfusions in March = 4 units of donated blood (can’t be bought in a pharmacy) = living life during spring break = continuing to be able to go to school with friends = Gift of Life for another 3 weeks = Priceless! Which is why, *IF you are able to donate blood, you should! You truly save a life that would otherwise not be alive, like Mia’s, EVERY single time you take the time to donate blood. Thankful beyond words for blood donors ❣️

I wonder who donated their blood so I can live?

Bone Marrow Biopsy

Mia had a bone marrow aspiration this morning. She did great and was smiling when she woke up from the anesthesia. What a trooper! - A Bone marrow biopsy and aspiration can show whether your bone marrow is healthy and making normal amounts of blood cells. (In DBA there’s no red cells being made.) Doctors use these procedures to diagnose and monitor blood and marrow diseases, including some cancers. - In Mia’s case with DBA, it’s recommended to get that procedure done every year in a half - two years. It was super fast she’s just a little sore where they poked her with a big needle on the back of her hip. A yummy brunch helped her to feel better!!
